A city gone mad
You want to know how it all happened?

Michael Miller:

This is how it happened. Trust me, I was there.

See, two days ago, Nathaniel Gorgeous had summoned the largest gathering of Masked to ‘The Dome’, a Gigantic indoor arena meant for Hoverball and large concert venues. Everyone was in attendance.

At the center of the Dome was the Queen and her court.

The Queen rose to give an announcement.

A shot rang out.

Fire enveloped the Queen.

Chaos ensued.

That night, lines had been drawn in the sand. Some said that the Queen had survived, but just barely, and she now slept in torpor. Others confirmed that she was dead, burnt to a crisp before their very eyes. Either way, it was supposed to be the Princesses’s time to rule. But Nathaniel Goregeous wouldn’t concede the throne. The changelings rose up to support him and their ‘five court army’. Upon hearing this news, The Carthians announced that they wouldn’t be following the Queen any longer, and began claiming Turf in the University district. The werewolves quickly began making similar declarations, saying the time of Vampire rule was at an end. During the morning of that same day, a disaster sealed the lines: An innocent’s house had blown up when a confrontation between the Los Incendios Tocado and Carthian Ghouls became heated, killing the mundane inhabitants. By the next night, the night of February 2nd, Whisper made a decree: The Residential district was off-limits. All those Masked who wanted to stay in the Residential district had to report to her to protect the borders, or they had to get out.

The city had gone mad.

But our first story of the hour, the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Pendros Police Officer Peter Packard. We go live to Investigative reporter David Grue, on the scene now

DAVID GRUE: Thanks Sandra. I’m here outside of the Guzzled Mug, located in Pendros’s Historic District at Lafayette and Lawrence, where Officer Packard was last scene.

(Cut from live footage to footage recorded earlier. A man’s profile picture can be seen. He wears a sweater and jeans, and plays with a small child)

DAVID CRUE: Peter Packard was a husband and father of four children. He was also the lead investigator for what the people of Pendros are now calling the ‘Vanishing Case’, which started with the disappearance of 21-year old Ashley Price.

(Cut to taped footage of a woman crying.)

JANICE PRICE: She had just started her fourth year of college, and her last location update said she was at #9. But then, she just vanished!

(Cut back to another photo, this one of an attractive, young blonde woman, wearing a soccer jersey and smiling. It falls on top of the photo of Officer Peter Packard)

DAVID CRUE: That footage was taken in July from an interview with Ashley’s mother, Janice Price. The only clue investigators found was Ashley’s bloody identifier chip, which was located inside of a Barkovian Incineration Plant, far from the Thinkbest bar Ashley was last seen. Thinkbest Industries has taken over the investigation of that disappearance, but have found no leads.

(More photos fall onto the pile, before it cuts to video footage of Pendros’s Industrial District, and the location of Barkovian Incineration plants.)

DAVID CRUE: What does Ashley’s situation have to do with Peter Packard? Ashley’s identifier chip wasn’t the last one found at this location; at least 4 others, investigators say, were located there as well. All of them missing cases, and all of them starting in Pendros’s Thinkbest district. Until two weeks ago. Another identifier chip was located, but this time, the person who had disappeared was last spotted…at the Guzzled Mug.

(Cut to footage of the Guzzled Mug during the day)

DAVID GRUE: That’s when Officer Packard’s case opened up. The historic district is under public protection, and Peter’s case got one step closer to being solved.

(The pile of photos begins burning up)

DAVID GRUE: That was until last week, when Officer Packard…vanished.

(Cut back to live footage of David Grue in front of the Guzzled Mug)

DAVID GRUE: Sandra, we’ve tried to get a comment the supposed owner of this bar, but he had no comment for us. Patrons of the bar told us that attendance has gone down ever since new tenants rented out the apartment above this abandoned office supply store located right next door; they have been unable to reach for comment.

SANDRA REED: David, I can see a gaping hole in the wall there. Has there been any indication of violence at that address?

DAVID GRUE: That’s funny thing Sandra. Witnesses say that the tenants have visitors all hours of the night, and that only yesterday there was a large group of women gathered there and at the bar. You can see into the residence from that whole, and as you can see, it seems decked out like a Cyberpunkers laboratory, see maybe the hole was caused by an experiment gone wrong? Like I said earlier, no one has answered our requests for an interview at the residence, and police say that there are no answers to be had during the day. One thing is for sure, once people began disappearing from the Guzzled Mug, disappearances at #9 stopped, which was around the same time as these tenants above the bar moved in. A very odd coincidence I think Sandra.

SANDRA REED: An odd coincidence indeed. Investigative reporter David Grue, thank you David.

DAVID GRUE: Thank you Sandra.

The End of Act 0
The Queen has finally gone insane!

Derek approached the Queen, and he asked “How can you be the Queen of anything?” Approached isn’t the right word; shoved is more like it, and asked isn’t the right word, more like screamed in terror and confusion. His dementation powers caused her mind to snap, and she responded “I married the night. I did’t give up the fight. I’m a Vampire queen, I’m a sinner,”

With that, her bodyguards picked her up, and people began dancing rhythmically around them, and suddenly Derek and his new friends were in a virtual music video; they resisted the Queen’s ability to make them dance and sing, and ran out of Club V.

Once they got home, (after 9News Report 1) they found Garren was in his room with the door locked, something he never did. One of his Thralls talked to him through the door, but upon Garren refusing to open it, his Thrall kicked it in, and found Garren had disappeared. The thrall wigged out, and began scanning the room for Obfuscated beings, while Rachel tried making everyone in the room fly into a rage. This caused the unnamed thrall to really flip his lid, while at the same time, Eliana began screaming at Garren about his tendency to not listen to her, which caused her to appear. The unnamed thrall attacked her, and as he did so, Garren, in a desire to feel the rage his thrall was exhibiting, sucked the Vitae out of Eliana, who scrambled to get out of the room. She tried pushing Rachel out of the way, but Rachel was wearing the suit provided to her by Garren, which burned Eliana, who collapsed into a Torpor. Garren commanded his minions to leave him be, only to find the unnamed thrall was still in a rage; Rachel reversed the effect, and the nameless thrall ran off into the night, his heart filled with fear.

Garren took Eliana into his bed, and drank deep her soul, and found her last gift to him was a restoration of all his memories. He left soon after, holding the dust that was now Eliana’s dead body, to voluntarily enter Torpor. (Storyteller’s note: Eliana was the oldest Vampire in Pendros, clocking in at over 600 years old. Her decay was swift and left nothing more than dust.) The group of Vampires that had been tied to Garren were now free to pursue their own agenda.

Interlude: Goodbye Mister Buttons
Why did you kill me mister?

Taki went to the Black Ale tavern to meet Amy Smith and Wren, not aware that they had been called away for a meeting of the Queen’s Inner Circle. Just before Taki entered the Tavern, the wooden interior of the structure collapsed, and moments later, she could hear the screams of those trapped inside. She moved quickly, moving wood and other debris out of the way, while the stone ceiling and walls began to make noises as if they too would soon crumble. She came across those still alive but dying slowly, and she made many mercy kills. She was screaming out for Amy and Pierre-Francois Brueria, who she finally found in the wreckage. His lower half was crushed, and his wererat ability to heal was barely keeping him alive. Taki dragged the owner of the bar out into the Circle of Underpendros. He begged her to find his son, Jacqueses, with whom he had had a falling out long ago. Francois told Taki to tell his son that he would inherit the bar, to which she told him that the bar was no more; he shook his head, and said there was magic there she didn’t understand. He told her to tell Jacqueses that he loved him, was proud of him, and that he always regretted not being their with him as his (Pierre’s) wife, mother of his son, died. Pierre took Taki’s hand, begged her not to give into the drink, as it had destroyed his life long ago, and while looking into her eyes, said:
“It’s so cold Taki…I’m so…cold…Jacqueses…I love you…my son…”

And with those final words, he died.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel Goregeous had called the Court together in Runningwater’s old court, a place otherwise condemned by Queen Sasha to never be entered again. The Queen had apparently gone insane, and now believed herself to be Lady Gaga, in a music video, as a Vampire. Nathaniel proposed warping the mind of the Queen’s body-double, so that she thought she actually was the Queen, instead of looking just like her, an idea that the body-double, naturally, objected to, and she tried making a run for it (she was stopped). Macario suggested that someone else be in charge, insinuating himself, which caused a whole lot of grumbling. Nathaniel decided a vote was needed, reminding everyone that most of Pendros would only recognize Anneliese Barkovia, Mayor of Pendros and the Vampire Princess as the ‘rightful heir’ of Queen Sasha’s rule. The group was divided between the Princess, the body-double Queen (to clarify, Nathaniel meant to find a cure to Sasha’s mental illness while the puppet Queen ruled), or ‘someone else’ (Macario). All went their separate ways, agreeing not to kill each other in Runningwater’s old court.

Yui Sakaichi, Kasumi “Misty” Flanders, and Lee, the Cherry Blossom Temple’s head of security and co-owner with Kasumi, were meditating in the Temple’s dojo, preparing themselves for their montly payment of Glamour to Mister Buttons, a changeling who had helped construct the Dojo and Temple with his ‘faire magic’. Wooden dust began falling from the ceiling, and within moments, it collapsed around them; only Yui’s ability to use telekinesis kept them from being crushed. Once away from the rubble, Yui quickly came to the conclusion that Mister Buttons was dead, and without a proper way to exchange ownership of the contract, his faire magic had undone itself.

“That’s about right,”

Michael Miller, Andy Charging Moose (One Man Bucket), and Cara had all come to the Temple seeking out Yui. They told them that wooden structures all over Pendros were collapsing, along with any that had used ‘TARDIS-like’ shaping (Bigger on inside than outside), which, as Michael noted, was most of Pendros’s any-masked-buildings. Thankfully, the magiks needed to disguise such buildings from mortal eyes was still in place, so large collapsed structures weren’t going to be on the evening news. They believed that the Dragons were able to speak with spirits, and wanted their help.

After he been scared out of his wits, Nameless found himself outside of the gates of the Cherry Blossom temple, the only other place he knew peace at. He pounded upon the invisible wall surrounding the Temple, wishing to enter, but was denied once more.

Yui knew the truth. The Sin-eaters had set up in the Temple long before it was a temple, and since they shared space with the Dragons, the rumor had developed that the Dragons could speak with spirits, another misconception, as spirits were not ghosts. It was one Yui was all too happy to exploit; while she disliked the Danse Macabre, the Kindred generally left her and the rest of the Dragons alone, out of fear.

Yui was not without her abilities. She had long ago perfected the ability to travel to the Astral Plane, and did so now. She hoped to find at least one ghost who she could make a deal with.

The truth was that the protective field around the Cherry Blossom Temple was made of ghosts. Placed there through a combined effort of the Mages and Sin-eaters, the field was a kind of spiderweb for ghosts. Once stuck there, the Sin-eaters would make a deal: if they helped keep immortal supernaturals (anyone with any template+a sin threshold of 6 or lower) out of the temple, they’d help the ghost pass on to their final destination, in order from oldest ghost to newest ghost. It also meant that they had access to an amazing network of information.

“Who amongst you can point me to the Murderer of Mister Buttons?”

The ghosts moaned, but Yui began to hear a chorus of ghostly moans.

“There there Yui!” Ghostly hands began pointing at the entrance, where Nameless stood. “The murderer stands there Yui, as does Mister Buttons himself!”

Yui made her way down the hill to where Nameless, unbeknownst to him, was slamming his fists against the ghosts of the temple, who were wailing “noooo…nooooo!” with each hit, pushing against the Kindred, and denying him entrance. Sure enough, Mister Buttons was wrapped around Nameless’s leg, looking up at the Vampire and crying.

“Why did you kill me mister? Why did you kill me?”

Yui also noticed other ghosts floating around Nameless, one humping his face out of anger. To attract such a large group of them meant he had indeed bloodied his hands many times; no wonder the ghosts of the Temple wouldn’t permit him to enter.
